CityLink Tullamarine Widening (CTW) Project – Bulla Road to Power Street

GHD was engaged by CPB Contractors on the delivery of the CityLink Tullamarine Widening project. This involved the widening of a 24km section of three major Melbourne freeways which were the western section of the CityLink tollway, and the Tullamarine and Westgate Freeways.

The project incorporated additional lanes, upgrading of existing and design of new bridges and civil structures together with other measures, including development of a new freeway management system to increase capacity of the existing road corridor, reduce travel times and improve safety across the network.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands Aircraft Pavement Refurbishment

The Australian Department of Finance and Deregulation appointed GHD in 2011 to undertake the feasibility, design and construction phase services of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI) Aircraft Pavement Refurbishment Project on behalf of the Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport.

The airport plays a significant role in the life of the local community. All goods and services delivered to CKI are by either ship or aircraft. These delivery services are dependent on facilities, the weather and limited local resources. During the wet season when the unloading of ships is not possible, the delivery of essential food, supplies and services is dependent on airfreight. The CKI Aircraft Pavement Refurbishment works aimed at extending the life of the aircraft pavement.

Gateway WA Western Australia Road Project Pavement Design

The Gateway WA project is an AUD1 billion road infrastructure project that was developed to improve the movement of traffic around in the vicinity of the airport. It is a vital link to move freight around the city.

The Leach Tonkin Interchange, one of four new interchanges constructed as part of the project, is located at the approach to the airport runway and designed to meet height restrictions to enable aircraft to land and take off safely.

Gateway WA Western Australia Road Project Roads and Bridge Design

The Gateway WA project is an AUD1 billion road infrastructure project that was developed to improve the uninterrupted movement of traffic in the vicinity of the airport. It is a vital link to move freight around the city.

The client brief called for a sustainable, aesthetically pleasing innovative design. The geometric design was severely constrained by height limitation due to aviation operations, high groundwater levels, sensitive wet lands and a restricted site. The project achieved an Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) IS Rating of Excellent.

nnovative Taxilane Pavement Rehabilitation

GHD was appointed to investigate pavement distress on a Taxilane and provide an innovative pavement design solution that would address the weak subgrade, reduce the disruption to a minimum and provide ease of construction.

The high ground water level and very weak subgrade would be challenging to address within the period. Standard pavement design options were considered but subsequently rejected by the client.

Perth Gateway WA – Design groundwater level determination

Main Roads Western Australia engaged GHD to advise on the Perth Gateway WA – Design Groundwater Level determination.

The Gateway WA Project included a major upgrade of road infrastructure in the area around Perth Airport. Due to a relatively shallow depth to groundwater within the project area, development of a project-wide design groundwater level was key in allowing the design and specification of pavement structures and several large bath structures that required dewatering.

Prebbleton Scheme Assessment

GHD has completed a review of five intersections adjacent to the Prebbleton, a township in the Selwyn District in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand, located 11 km southwest of the centre of Christchurch.

The objective of this project was to propose suitable upgrades to improve safety, reduce severance through the township, and provide more efficient linkages to the motorway interchange currently under construction.

Chris Weale

Russell has over 21 years' professional experience in geotechnical and civil engineering and has three alliance projects to his credit. He has significant experience in concept and detailed design through to the delivery and on-site superintendence of projects. As a geotechnical and pavements engineer he has project-managed and designed new rural and urban roads, rehabilitation, repair and reseal projects, as well as airport runway construction. His experience includes the investigation and design of new and existing embankments on soft soils, cutting design and investigation of both soft and hard ground as the responsible engineer and superintendent.
