Calwell Slipway Remediation


Port Nelson Ltd, in partnership with the Ministry for the Environment, engaged GHD to investigate the nature and extent of historical contamination to one of the largest slipways in New Zealand – the Calwell Slipway at Port Nelson.

Environmental investigations identified historical inadequate containment of used antifouling paints and other products of vessel maintenance had contaminated marine muds with Tributyltin (Tbt) and Copper among other contaminants. The levels exceed allowable limits for disposal of the dredged muds to the consented marine spoil dump. Navigability through dredging is fundamental to the port’s continued operation and due to the contamination, conventional dredging and disposal of the spoil at sea was not possible.

Craig is a maritime and coastal engineer with solid experience in investigation, concept design, detailed design, tender documentation, environmental assessment and construction supervision. A member of Institution of Engineers Australia, he has worked on a number of high profile coastal and maritime projects, including Coffs Harbour Northern Breakwater Upgrade Feasibility Study, Ballina Northern Breakwater Repair and Restoration Strategy, Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project, Sydney Desalination Plant, and Camden Haven Northern Breakwater Repair and Restoration Strategy.

John Nicholls - New South Wales

John is the manager of the Maritime & Coastal Group in New South Wales.

He is a structural engineer with more than 20 years of civil, structural & marine experience for clients in the defence, oil & gas, nuclear, power and leisure sectors in the UK and Australia. John’s dominant area of activity has been in the design, analysis and assessment of offshore, coastal harbour, marine and oil & gas structures with experience of design management of related projects.

John has significant peer review and due diligence experience relating to the assessment of multi-disciplinary maritime and defence projects.  John also has experience in risk assessment and management techniques and applying these to asset integrity management studies.

Scott Vivian - Queensland

Scott is the Project Delivery Manager for the Queensland Maritime and Coastal team. 

A Maritime structural engineer, Scott has a broad experience base in the delivery of maritime projects both from a technical and management perspective. Delivering projects through the integration of design, constructability and environmental outcomes at every stage of the project are key tenets of Scott's approach. 

Scott has been involved in a wide range of projects including oil and gas and bulk material terminals, general purpose and small craft facilities, coastal defences, construction and MOF facilities, dredging projects, condition assessment and remediation of port infrastructure and marine temporary works.

Richard Hill - Victoria

Richard is a principal in the Victorian Maritime & Coastal Group and has close to 20 years' experience in port and maritime engineering.

Richard is a Board member of PIANC Australia and previous Chair to the UK Section of PIANC. Richard has also acted as a specialist business advisor to UK Trade & Investment (Ports team) in the UK in 2011.

Richard has extensive international experience of ports, terminals, maritime structures and small craft facilities, having managed and delivered a string of high profile projects. His skills and knowledge extends to container terminal planning, bulk material terminals, fishing ports, marina developments and waterfront developments.

Fred Bicker - Western Australia

Fred Bicker

Fred is a civil engineer with 31 years’ experience in project, design, construction and contract management for projects in Canada, Qatar, Australia, Malaysia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sudan, Egypt, Nigeria, Germany, South Africa and the Netherlands. He has considerable knowledge of the oil and gas sector having recently worked in Canada on a FEED study for a major LNG processing plant and marine export terminal. Earlier he worked on an assignment as Project Director for a FEED Study for the importation of LNG into Mossel Bay in South Africa for PetroSA.

Craig Lewis

Craig has more than 18 years’ experience with the design and analysis of structural elements for infrastructure, coastal and utility systems. He has also performed static and dynamic analyses for various finite element structural programs and has extensive experience with seismic design. Craig is extremely familiar with various types of structural materials and construction methods, including reinforced concrete and steel.

Craig has direct experience with design details, both new construction and repair/retrofit and has worked with various design codes including AISC, ACI, UBC, CBC and API. He has provided repair and retrofit design details for various structural elements including concrete load-bearing piles, bent caps and slabs. He also manages several extensive site inspections and field surveys to determine the above and below water condition of marine structures.
