Adobe Gulch Grasslands Habitat Restoration

GHD is playing a key role in helping the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission restore a 66 acre watershed protection area in San Mateo County known as the Adobe Gulch Grasslands.

Our team developed a Mitigation and Monitoring Plan, produced design drawings and outlined specifications to restore the site to a diverse mosaic of native grassland, oak woodland, wetland and riparian habitat for species protected under the US Endangered Species Act. This includes the California Red-Legged Frog, San Francisco Garter Snake, Mission Blue Butterfly and the Bay Checkerspot Butterfly.

Ambuklao Dam Geotechnical Investigations, SN Aboitiz

GHD has undertaken a number of consulting services for SN Aboitiz (SNAP), including environmental studies, hydrological studies and structural assessments.

GHD also conducted geotechnical investigations to support SNAP’s intended plans to rehabilitate the structures of Ambuklao Dam.

Bauxite Mine Enviro Impact

GHD have been working with Chalco Australia, a commercial arm of the Aluminium Corporation of China, in their tender and approvals for development of the Aurukun Bauxite resource in north Queensland.

This included initial site assessments, preparation of the environmental components of the pre-feasibility study and preparation of environmental approvals for both the mine and refinery components of the project. Key to the approvals will be Environmental Impact Statements currently in preparation for both sites.

Burgos Wind Project Environmental and Social Impact Assessment

Energy Development Corp. (EDC) commissioned GHD to complete several assessments and plans for the expansion of its wind farm project in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, including: the environmental impact assessment and Environmental Performance Report and Management Plan. GHD’s engagement extended to the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the 150 MW Burgos wind project, the operating transmission line connecting it to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) substation in Laoag City, and the jetty.

Capital Strategic Dredging

NPC proposed the development of additional berth sites within the South Arm of the Hunter River, in the Port of Newcastle. The developments would assist NPC in meeting its objectives of diversifying trade and development options within the Port.

GHD was engaged by Newcastle Port Corporation to undertake an Environmental Assessment and associated engineering studies for the capital dredging of ten berth box sites and ancillary channel widening in the South Arm in Hunter River, Port of Newcastle.

Darra to Springfield Transport Corridor

GHD was engaged by Queensland Rail (Horizon Alliance) to deliver the Darra to Springfield Transport Corridor Project, a major transport initiative required to service the future needs of the growing western corridor region.

The Queensland Government built a new passenger rail line from Darra to Springfield and duplicated the Centenary Highway between Richlands and Springfield. This project is part of the State Government’s South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program 2007 – 2026 and will be delivered in stages.

Designing Ports for Easter Island

Easter Island, located in the Pacific Ocean 3700km to the west of continental Chile, is dependent on shipping to supply goods for the local population and for its growing tourism industry.

The island, however, lacks a sheltered all-weather port. Ships that arrive to the island unload goods offshore onto smaller boats. These boats unload the goods at a small-scale dock in Hanga-Piko.  This system delays the delivery of goods to the island and increases transport costs.

EIS for Kangaroo Valley sewerage scheme

Shoalhaven Water is preparing to develop and install a sewerage scheme for the Kangaroo Valley village. This will improve community amenities and the quality of the water that flows into the Kangaroo Valley and forms part of the Sydney drinking water supply.

GHD was engaged to undertake a comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), including community consultation, assessments of traffic and transport, surface and ground water, flora and fauna impacts, indigenous and cultural heritage assessment, air and noise assessment, and visual amenity.

Environment Approval quarantine waste

Environmental Appraisal for Transport for London

In December 2007, Colin Buchanan was commissioned by Transport for London (TfL) to undertake a Scheme Identification Study for Henly’s Corner, the signal-controlled junction of the A406 North Circular and the A598 (Regents Park and Finchley roads) in the London borough of Barnet. 

This signalised junction is usually heavily congested during peak hours and has a history of serious and fatal accidents.

Indigenous Carbon Trading

With the establishment of the Australian Government’s Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) – there are now opportunities for saleable carbon credits to be generated in the land sector, including through reforestation projects. As a result, Indigenous communities are showing interest in wanting to reforest their lands and benefit from broader economic and social opportunities.

A few years ago, GHD was commissioned by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities to raise awareness amongst Indigenous people about carbon trading. Initially, this was done by hosting a series of workshops around the country that provided valuable information on the technical, legal and financial issues involved.

Terminales Canal de Chacao

Ingeniería terminales de transbordo Canal de Chacao - Región de Los Lagos, Chile.

El Ministerio de Obras Públicas contrató los servicios de GHD para realizar estudios básicos e ingeniería de detalles de las obras portuarias, terrestres y marítimas para nuevos terminales de transbordo en el Canal de Chacao, que conectan al continente con la Isla de Chiloé en el sur de Chile. Entre las obras proyectadas se encuentra ampliar las rampas existentes en Punta Coronel y Chacao para permitir que operen en toda situación de marea y además plantear la construcción de una rampa adicional en Punta Coronel, que permita manejar los servicios en períodos de alta demanda. También se incluyó proyectar terminales en los dos sectores, que cuenten con todo tipo de servicios para atender las necesidades de los pasajeros que esperan cruzar el canal.

Interface Australia is Australia’s largest manufacturer of carpet tiles for residential, commercial and industrial use. The company engaged GHD to assist with a major upgrade of its manufacturing facility. 

It was important to the client that any upgrade was arranged so as to minimise disruption to ongoing plant operations.

Mount Gambier Library

The new public library is a focal point in the centre of the Mount Gambier township and includes various elements that make the facility a functional space for a broad cross-section of the community.

National Health Service, uk

GHD has developed the Low Carbon Strategy for the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) in Wales. This framework to reduce carbon emissions is being implemented through the participation of numerous regional and organisational functional units, and targets a diverse range of emission sources.

Completed in April 2012, the project saw our team in the UK develop a new approach to carbon management. As part of our engagement, we held a series of workshops with NHS and government stakeholders to shape and inform the new Low Carbon Strategy before it was submitted for approval to the Welsh Government.

Nolans Pre-feasibility Study

Arafura Resources Ltd (Arafura) is proposing to develop the Nolans Rare Earths Project (the Project) about 135 km north-west of Alice Springs, Northern Territory (NT). The Project is targeting a fluorapatite-hosted mineral deposit containing rare earth elements at Nolans Bore.

Key components of the Project include a mine, concentrator, chemical processing plant and borefield. Project activities include construction, mining, processing, rehabilitation and decommissioning of the mine and associated infrastructure.

Oxley-Wacol WWTP Upgrade - EIS

GHD developed two and three-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models for Brisbane Water as part of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIS) for a proposed upgrade of the Oxley and Wacol wastewater treatment plants (WWTP).

The assessment involved quantifying the impact of the existing wastewater treatment plant configurations as well as determining the relative impacts of two proposed upgrade options on receiving water quality.

Pagbilao Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessment, Therma Luzon Incorporated

Thermal Luzon Inc is considering partnering with the current owner and operator of the Pagbilao Power Station for the construction and operation of a third unit and associated facilities within the plant. Prior to finalising the agreements, GHD was appointed to prepare the Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessment, focusing on the area’s soil and groundwater, to determine possible or recognised environmental conditions.

Redondo Peninsula Energy Geohazard Study

GHD was commissioned by RP Energy to undertake a detailed natural terrain hazard assessment of its proposed 600 MW coal fired power station site near Subic Bay. This project involved unmanned aerial vehicle imagery procurement and mapping, GIS analysis, detailed geomorphological and hazard mapping, definition of failure mechanisms for a major cut slope failure and above slope landslides and rock/boulder falls, and detailing/designing of practical related remedial works.

Review of environmental factors for Wagga Wagga levee upgrades

GHD was engaged by Wagga Wagga City Council to prepare a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for the proposed upgrade of the Wagga Wagga and North Wagga Wagga levees along the Murrumbidgee River.

The REF incorporated the findings of a number of technical assessments, including ecology, hydrology, noise and vibration, and cultural and historic heritage.

Route Optimisation for EECA

St Barbara Limited Gold mines

As part of its business and compliance management requirements, St Barbara Limited has engaged GHD to prepare mine closure and rehabilitation plans along with subsequent closure cost estimates for its gold mining operations.

Our team developed 'domain' closure and rehabilitation plans for the mines' various site features, tailings storage and waste rock facilities. The plans include consideration of new regulatory needs and St Barbara’s consultation with their stakeholders.

Townsville Marine Precinct

Inner city residential expansion and the desire to improve current marine facilities, both environmentally and structurally, led the Port of Townsville to embark on the concept of a new marine precinct.

The precinct, which was opened in 2011, features a marina at the mouth of Townsville's Ross River and will consolidates a large portion of the city’s marine industry into one central location. It provides modern facilities to support boat building and maintenance including berths for various vessels, refuelling facilities, commercial and recreational businesses and cold storage and distribution facilities for the seafood industry.

WA Schools Public Private Partnership

The State Government of Western Australia elected to procure four new primary schools and three new secondary schools, and the second stage of an existing secondary school using a Public Private Partnership (PPP) process.

This project will use the skills and abilities of the private sector to design, build, finance and maintain the schools, allowing principals and teachers more time to focus on teaching and delivering valuable student outcomes.

Mt Arthur Coal mine is a large open-cut mine in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia.

To meet the most stringent noise limits for mining operations, GHD was commissioned by WesTrac (Caterpillar dealers for NSW/ACT and WA) to acoustically attenuate three Caterpillar 789C off-highway trucks.

Monique is a Principal Environmental Planner with more than 17 years of experience in statutory and strategic planning, including planning due diligence and site assessment, provision of planning approvals advice, preparation and assessment of development and rezoning applications, and preparation of land use strategies and statutory planning instruments. She has a strong understanding of planning and environmental legislation, including particular skills in identifying innovative approaches to planning approval pathways. Monique also has a background in environmental impact assessment and has a breadth of understanding across a range of technical disciplines.
