Barwon Water Head Office Upgrade

Barwon Water engaged GHD to conduct a feasibility study exploring options for retrofitting its existing head office building into a contemporary office space.

The existing head office consisted of two buildings built at different stages. No structural documentation was available for the older building, built during the 1960s, whilst some design documentation was available for the later built building.

Brewery upgrade in Queensland

The extension of the Carlton & United Brewery at Yatala in Queensland has more than doubled its production capacity.

The 3 million-hectalitre expansion of the brewery increased annual capacity to 5.5 million hectalitres. The GHD team provided structural, mechanical, civil, hydraulics, electrical, architectural, water process and chemical services, as well as project management contract administration.

CityLink Tullamarine Widening (CTW) Project – Bulla Road to Power Street

GHD was engaged by CPB Contractors on the delivery of the CityLink Tullamarine Widening project. This involved the widening of a 24km section of three major Melbourne freeways which were the western section of the CityLink tollway, and the Tullamarine and Westgate Freeways.

The project incorporated additional lanes, upgrading of existing and design of new bridges and civil structures together with other measures, including development of a new freeway management system to increase capacity of the existing road corridor, reduce travel times and improve safety across the network.

Cunderdin B Pump Station

The Water Corporation of Western Australia engaged GHD to advise on a project to improve the efficiency of the Cunderdin B Pump Station (PS B) which is part of the Goldfields and Agricultural Water Supply (GAWS) scheme.

PS B supplies water in an easterly direction along the Main Conduit (MC) from Cunderdin to Kalgoorlie. The three existing pumps in PS B can operate in parallel to achieve 77.6 ML/d. However due to surge constraints, this mode is currently not possible.

Doha Airport Terminal Extension

Qatar Airways at Doha Airport needed a two-storey extension to the existing departures terminal. Building on previous experience gained from similar project work, GHD provided architectural and engineering design services, as well as contract administration and project management services.

The extension was designed and constructed on a fast-track basis, which enabled its completion within just six months. The new section has given Qatar Airways additional gate boarding lounges, a first class lounge and cafeteria, increased check-in area capacity and additional baggage handling systems.

Fisherman’s Beach Redevelopment

The Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) in Victoria engaged GHD to prepare architectural concepts for the redevelopment of the Fisherman’s Beach precinct.

The precinct is a popular beach location at Torquay for walking and swimming, and is a launching site for commercial and recreational boats. The new building will be a high-profile development delivering a quality, cost-effective and sustainable outcome that showcases what can be achieved in coastal development.

Forrestfield Airport Link

GHD is engaged by the construction joint venture partners to complete an integrated detail design of the Forrestfield Airport Link in Perth, Western Australia.

The Forrestfield Airport Link project will deliver an 8.5 km extension of the existing Public Transport Authority urban rail network in Perth connecting the Midland Line, just past Bayswater Station, to Forrestfield, running underground in twin bored tunnels underneath the Swan River, Tonkin Highway and Perth Airport.

Galliford Try Waste to Energy Project

GHD was engaged by Galliford Try (GT) to advise on the design of Livigunn BIOMASS project spanning three power stations. The plant is designed to generate electricity using biomass waste through an Advanced Thermal Treatment process.

GHD assembled a global project team across the UK, North America and Europe, providing a fully integrated multidisciplinary 3D model for safe, reliable, innovative and cost effective project design and construction.

Khalifa Stadium

A spectacular new roof and feature lighting consolidate the status of Khalifa Stadium as one of Doha’s premier developments.

The Khalifa Sports City Development Committee awarded GHD two contracts to redevelop the Khalifa Sports City. The scope of the work included an upgrade of the stadium and landscape redevelopment over an area of 95ha.

Sharjah Airport Expansion

The proposed expansion and redevelopment of Sharjah International Airport is an exciting architectural opportunity. The project involves expansion of the transit area through the creation of three new gate lounges with new air bridges and increased access through the duty free area, transfer counters and cafeterias. The design also includes extension of the arrivals area (with an in-bound baggage system), arrivals concourse, customs areas, immigration pod, renovation and upgrade of driveways and substantial external landscaping. Sustainable Industries Education Centre – Tonsley TAFE

GHD was engaged by the Department of Planning Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) to provide civil, structural and traffic engineering services for the AUD110 million Sustainable Industries Education Centre – Tonsley Tafe – in collaboration with MPH Architects as the Lead Professional Consultant.

This landmark adaptive re-use project comprised the construction of a “building within a building” – the conversion of a dilapidated automotive factory into a modern and vibrant teaching facility. It required the commitment and collaboration of all involved to realise this striking transformation.

Upgrade of Bolivar WWTP Aeration Tank Diffused Air System

SA Water required refurbishment of the wastewater treatment plant aeration tank diffused air system at Bolivar, the largest WWTP in South Australia.

The company engaged GHD to advise on the upgrade, with the objectives of improved reliability of diffusers (current changeover is every two years); increased removal of nitrogen from effluent; and decreased power consumption of blowers.

Barrie Thom is GHD’s Service Line Leader for Design Documentation in North America. He is a CAD/BIM specialist with 20+ years’ experience in the building and machine design industries. Barrie has led drafting, modelling and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) efforts on a variety of projects and is actively involved with developing and managing systems to improve project outcomes.
