Sport has the power to change lives. The power and popularity of sport is increasingly a key component of international development programs to improve health, education, disability and gender equality around the world.

GHD is acting on behalf of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) on the Steering Board of a global knowledge hub for sport for development: the International Platform on Sport for Development and Peace (

The appointment reflects GHD’s role as managing contractor for the Pacific Sports Partnership (PSP), which provides funding and support for sport for development programs in Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu. Ben Howard, Program Manager of the Pacific Sports Partnership, recently attended the Steering Board meeting at Marlborough House in London, UK.

Ben says, “Australia was one of the early leaders and innovators in leveraging the power of sport to promote development and peace. We have been working hard with our client, DFAT, to share the experience of PSP and position Australia again as a leader at the international level. Being part of governance gives Australia and the Asia Pacific countries a voice in the global conversation on sport for development.”

Forming part of DFAT’s new Australian Sports Diplomacy Strategy, the PSP initiative is delivered in partnership with 13 Australian national sporting organisations, three world bodies and six regional sports organisations to deliver targeted sport for development activities that support 52 Pacific National Sporting Federations.

Ben adds, “It’s a tremendous privilege to be part of PSP. The program shows how using sport as a development tool can help tackle social problems, combat disease risk factors, and achieve better inclusion for women and people with disability.”
